Begin with blood itself

Review plasma, red cells, white cells and platelets before opening a laboratory report. Understand counts, concentrations, indices, units and flags.

Work through the common panels

Structured modules cover full blood count, ferritin and haematinics, U&E and kidney markers, liver blood tests, bone profile, thyroid testing, HbA1c, inflammatory markers, coeliac serology and coagulation basics.

Use ranges carefully

Reference intervals vary by laboratory, method and population. The course uses clearly labelled representative UK adult examples while teaching learners to prioritise the current report and clinical context.

Test and document your learning

Complete mandatory module checks, eight synthetic cases and a 30-question final assessment. Record active study time for your CPD portfolio.

YOUR COMPLETION EVIDENCE

Finish with a professional CPD certificate

Complete all required learning and pass the 30-question final assessment at 80% or above. You can then create and download a named certificate recording the course, completion date, assessment score and your declared active study time.

The certificate and reflection record can support NMC revalidation, GMC appraisal and HCPC CPD portfolios when the learning is relevant to your role. It records educational completion; it does not certify clinical competence or regulator endorsement.

Frequently asked questions

Does the course provide one national reference range?

No. There is no single universal adult range for every UK laboratory. Representative examples are taught alongside the rule that the current laboratory report takes precedence.

Will this course teach diagnosis from abnormal blood results?

The foundation course concentrates on what tests measure, safe pattern description and limitations. It introduces abnormal patterns without authorising diagnosis or treatment.

Who is it for?

Learners from support roles through registered and advanced practice who want a clear foundation in commonly requested blood tests.
